A Spectrometer to Study Elastic and Diffractive Physics at LHC
The possibility to study elastic and diffractive physics in pp collisions at
LHC is investigated. For this purpose we have considered detectors close to the
beam in conjunction with the magnetic elements of the accelerator to provide a
high precision spectrometer for very forward final state protons. The
geometrical acceptance is given and momentum resolution is calculated for
different spatial resolution detectors.Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures, Latex, submitted in International Journal of

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of open citations to retracted articles: the Wakefield 1998 et al.'s case
In this article, we show the results of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of open citations on a popular and highly cited retracted paper: âIleal-lymphoid-nodular hyperplasia, non-specific colitis and pervasive developmental disorder in childrenâ by Wakefield et al., published in 1998. The main purpose of our study is to understand the behavior of the publications citing one retracted article and the characteristics of the citations the retracted article accumulated over time. Our analysis is based on a methodology which illustrates how we gathered the data, extracted the topics of the citing articles and visualized the results. The data and services used are all open and free to foster the reproducibility of the analysis. The outcomes concerned the analysis of the entities citing Wakefield et al.âs article and their related in-text citations. We observed a constant increasing number of citations in the last 20 years, accompanied with a constant increment in the percentage of those acknowledging its retraction. Citing articles have started either discussing or dealing with the retraction of Wakefield et al.âs article even before its full retraction happened in 2010. Articles in the social sciences domain citing the Wakefield et al.âs one were among those that have mostly discussed its retraction. In addition, when observing the in-text citations, we noticed that a large number of the citations received by Wakefield et al.âs article has focused on general discussions without recalling strictly medical details, especially after the full retraction. Medical studies did not hesitate in acknowledging the retraction of the Wakefield et al.âs article and often provided strong negative statements on it
A Programming Interface for Creating Data According to the SPAR Ontologies and the OpenCitations Data Model
The OpenCitations Data Model (OCDM) is a data model for bibliographic metadata and citations based on the SPAR Ontologies and developed by OpenCitations to expose all the data of its collections as sets of RDF statements compliant with an ontology named OpenCitations Ontology. In this paper, we introduce oc_ocdm, i.e. a Python library developed for creating OCDM-compliant RDF data even if the programmer has no expertise in Semantic Web technologies. After an introduction of the library and its main characteristics, we show a number of projects within the OpenCitations infrastructure that adopt it as their building block unit
BiblioDAP'21: The 1st Workshop on Bibliographic Data Analysis and Processing
Automatic processing of bibliographic data becomes very important in digital libraries, data science and machine learning due to its importance in keeping pace with the significant increase of published papers every year from one side and to the inherent challenges from the other side. This processing has several aspects including but not limited to I) Automatic extraction of references from PDF documents, II) Building an accurate citation graph, III) Author name disambiguation, etc. Bibliographic data is heterogeneous by nature and occurs in both structured (e.g. citation graph) and unstructured (e.g. publications) formats. Therefore, it requires data science and machine learning techniques to be processed and analysed. Here we introduce BiblioDAP'21: The 1st Workshop on Bibliographic Data Analysis and Processing
The extra-lymphoid compartment of breast milk: Not a simple transfer of passive immunization
Discussion on how breast milk shows similarity to the immune gut micro-environment, creating a sort of immune "extended gut" between mother and child; helps advance the newborn's immune endowment by further tuning mucosal immunity and CD8 memory cells in the early life intestin
The OpenCitations Data Model
A variety of schemas and ontologies are currently used for the
machine-readable description of bibliographic entities and citations. This
diversity, and the reuse of the same ontology terms with different nuances,
generates inconsistencies in data. Adoption of a single data model would
facilitate data integration tasks regardless of the data supplier or context
application. In this paper we present the OpenCitations Data Model (OCDM), a
generic data model for describing bibliographic entities and citations,
developed using Semantic Web technologies. We also evaluate the effective
reusability of OCDM according to ontology evaluation practices, mention
existing users of OCDM, and discuss the use and impact of OCDM in the wider
open science community.Comment: ISWC 2020 Conference proceeding
TechMiner: Extracting Technologies from Academic Publications
In recent years we have seen the emergence of a variety of scholarly datasets. Typically these capture âstandardâ scholarly entities and their connections, such as authors, affiliations, venues, publications, citations, and others. However, as the repositories grow and the technology improves, researchers are adding new entities to these repositories to develop a richer model of the scholarly domain. In this paper, we introduce TechMiner, a new approach, which combines NLP, machine learning and semantic technologies, for mining technologies from research publications and generating an OWL ontology describing their relationships with other research entities. The resulting knowledge base can support a number of tasks, such as: richer semantic search, which can exploit the technology dimension to support better retrieval of publications; richer expert search; monitoring the emergence and impact of new technologies, both within and across scientific fields; studying the scholarly dynamics associated with the emergence of new technologies; and others. TechMiner was evaluated on a manually annotated gold standard and the results indicate that it significantly outperforms alternative NLP approaches and that its semantic features improve performance significantly with respect to both recall and precision
Mild AgOTf Catalyzed Synthesis of 1-Carbosubstituted-isochromenes
One of the most efficient methods for the construction of 1-substituted isochromenes (and related heteroaryl compounds such as pyrano[4,3-b]pyridines) is the metal catalyzed regioselective domino cycloisomerization/nucleophilic addition reaction of a properly substituted 2-alkynyl(hetero)arylaldehyde in the presence of a suitable nucleophile. The reaction with oxygen nucleophiles is the most studied and several metal catalyst, i.e., Pd(II), Cu(I), Ag(I), Au(I) and In(III), demonstrated to be effective for synthesis of 1-alkoxyisochromenes. Conversely, the reaction with carbon nucleophiles, and in particular with enolizable carbonyl compounds, is relatively less investigated. In connection with our ongoing interest in the development of silver catalysed domino approaches involving alkyne derivatives, we report here a silver catalyzed domino approach to isochromenes starting from 2-alkynyl(hetero)arylaldehydes and enolizable carbonyl compounds. The reaction yields range from fair to very good. The reaction mechanism is also investigated and the formation of by-products discussed
